Vasa was a famous 17th century warship that foundered and sank after sailing about 1,300 metres (1,400 yards) into its maiden voyage from the Stockholm harbour on the 10th of August 1628. After falling into obscurity, searches were launched and the ship was recovered in 1961. Today it is on display in a Stockholm museum and has become a symbol of Swedish history and military might in the 17th century.

The Victoria

The Victoria room’s design is inspired by Magellan’s journey around the world, with a subtle mix of Iberian and Asian decoration: red and saffron tones, dark wood furniture and a chaise longue, in short, a call to escape and reverie. It is located on the second floor with a view on the garden.

The Victoria was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, from September 1519 to September 1521, under the command of the explorer Magellan. The ship was a 16th century, 45-man crewed, Spanish carrack with which Magellan discovered a passage to the West and the Pacific Ocean, south of Chile. This passage was named the Strait of Magellan. Upon the expedition’s return to Spain, minus its captain who had been killed in the Philippines, and after having crossed the Indian Ocean and passed the Cape of Good Hope, the Victoria’s crew had been reduced to only 18.

Mary Rose was a Tudor emblem and was part of the naval program of King Henry VIII of England. Having served for 33 years in several wars against France and Scotland and having been largely rebuilt in 1536, she fought for the last time on July 19, 1545. In her last fight, she sank in the Solent, the arm of sea separating England from the Isle of Wight opposite the castle of Sousthsea, in which was Henry VIII. The wreck of the Mary Rose was rediscovered in 1971 and a rescue operation was organized in 1982. This, one of the most complex and expensive projects in the history of maritime archeology, made it possible to bail out a large section of the ship and thousands of objects dating back to the Tudor period.

The surroundings

Grand-Champ

At the foot of the “Landes de Lanvaux”, Grand-Champ is a flow-filled and welcoming town.

A town with much character, it has many archaeological ruins, an architectural heritage rich in chapels, castles, wayside crosses, fountains and mills.

In the parish church one can find two sculpted wooden panels, statues dating back to the 19th century, cassocks woven in gold and silver…

The town also has:

A swimming pool and solarium
A tennis court
Ponds and rivers for fishing
An open air market every Saturday morning

Vannes, the medieval city

The capital of Morbihan, Vannes is a multi-faceted city: marina, fortified city, medieval city, a city of art and history…

With its several gates, such as the one leading to the old prison, you can gain access to the fortified city and its timber-framed houses. The marina looks like a seaside resort with its many terraces. You can go for a nice stroll through the rampart gardens, in bloom throughout the year, and the 13th century bathhouses.

You can go all the way to the Conleau peninsula, with its seaside pines and beautiful view over the Gulf of Morbihan.

Worth visiting in Vannes are also the aquarium, butterfly garden, and of course its great open air market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, where you will find the freshest local products and fish.

The Gulf of Morbihan

The Gulf of Morbihan (little sea in Breton) is a veritable small interior sea. It is in the “most beautiful bays in the world” club. Indeed, the Gulf offers a unique display in which earth and sea merge in changing landscapes.

Legend has it there are as many islands as there are days in a year. In truth, around 40 have been counted, among which 30 are inhabited. A cruise across the Gulf will give you a better picture and allow you to discover this fascinating labyrinth..

Many hiking trails can also give you the opportunity to admire beautiful landscapes, visit quaint, authentic villages such as Larmor-Baden, and discover breathtaking vantage points.
